Values, Self Confidence And The Feeling Of Belonging

Values give us self-awareness, self-confidence and the feeling of belonging. They help us make the right choices and force us to develop integrity. Values show us how to choose between different priorities and give us an idea of what improvements we need to be made to improve our relationships with others. When we act with these values they give us credibility, and help us to know where we stand, and clarify what we will and will not tolerate. We make many choices daily, some have very minor significance, others of extreme importance, and each one of these choices we make have a huge impact not just on us, but those around us. Even a very small decision such as having a burger instead of a salad could effect our health in the long run, and in result affect the people we love. There are seven values that are absolutely essential for human survival. The seven include justice and fairness, caring, respect responsibility, honesty, loyalty and liberty. These seven values play a major ro le in our lives. Many of us forget these values that we have been taught. But most patients are treated by primary healthcare physicians who are not trained in diagnosis for retinopathy or they delay referrals to ophthalmologists. The delay caused in detection of early stage retinopathy causes the disease to progress to a stage where eye sight is permanently lost. The inability of the pancreas to produce sufficient insulin and the development of insulin resistance can be treated with medicines, insulin therapy, diet and exercise, but most patients fail to adhere to the regimen and this results in poor management of blood sugar. The vasculature of the retina develops weak walls and the capillaries supplying blood to the retina begin to rupture during the non-proliferative stage. As a response to the loss of blood vessels, neo-vessels develop on the retina to maintain the supply of oxygen. This causes macular thickening during the proliferative phase of diabetic retinopathy and causes blindness which cannot be reversed. The objective of the project that follows is to reduce the disease burden due to diabetic retinopathy by planning a screening program to screen diabetic patients. The program shall create a mobile screening centre that can help to spread awareness about retinopathy so that awareness can be generated by reaching out to people in workplaces, educational institutions, and even in prisons, so that patients remain alert to symptoms and seek timely medical treatment. The goal of the project is to reduce blindness and visual impairment that occurs due to uncontrolled diabetes and the program shall be implemented as follows: Creation of awareness at the community level Advertisements with content that shows the connection between poorly managed diabetes and the occurrence of diabetic retinopathy . Narrative Problem Statement Globally, 34.6% of all diabetics suffer from diabetic retinopathy (Hajar, et al., 2015). Diabetic retinopathy occurs in a high number of patients due to a high prevalence of diabetes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the WHO has ranked the country seventh in the world in terms of the number of people afflicted with the non-communicable disease (Al Dawish, et al., 2016). The disease burden due to the debilitating diabetic retinopathy in Saudi Arabia is high and it is an area of priority for Saudi National Prevention of Blindness committee and the Ministry of Health. Several associated complications that occur due to high blood glucose levels increase the morbidity and mortality due to diabetes. Unhealthy diets, a sedentary lifestyle and very less physical activity among urban population is the main reason for occurrence of diabetes (Majeed, et al., 2014). In a study in the Taif region, it was found that 33% of all diabetics suffer from diabetic retinopathy(Al Ghamdi, et al., 2012). In an other study in the Madinah region, 36% of the diabetes patients were found to suffer from diabetes induced retinopathy(El-Bab, et al., 2012). 77% of all diabetics have been reported to suffer from some form of diabetic retinopathy within 10 years from onset(Hajar, et al., 2015). Blindness and visual impairment can be prevented if retinopathy is detected early. Lifestyle modifications and control of blood glucose level can prevent diabetic retinopathy and other complications associated with poorly controlled diabetes, where patient's blood glucose levels are 200mg/dl. In Saudi Arabia diabetes has been well recognised as a public health problem. The economic burden on the country may have reached $0.87 billion (Naeem, 2015). Together with the complications diabetes is an expensive disease to manage. It can also cause increased absenteeism, reduced productivity of individuals when they are ill from the complications, they may lose employment if disabled, years are also lost due to mortality. The cost of pain and suffering is huge. Cost burden on the healthcare system, expenses on medication and administrative costs are immense(Naeem, 2015). Within two decades the increase in the healthcare cost for diabetes has increased by 500% in the kingdom. Of the 180 billion medical budget in the year 2014, 25 billion Saudi riyals were spent on the treatment of diabetic patients. Annual expenditure towards treatment of diabetics in Saudi Arabia is twice that of people without diabetes annually at $1255 versus $590 (Alhowaish, 2013). What is diabetes Diabetes is a serious public health problem in Saudi Arabia and is often associated with obesity and occurrence of cardiovascular disease in the population. The high levels of blood sugar in type 2 diabetes occur either due to less production of insulin from the beta cells of islets of Langerhans in pancreas or due to insulin resistance or both. Insulin resistance is caused due to lack of exercise and a sedentary life. The insulin receptors on cells do not function and the transport of blood glucose to cells is impaired. This causes the patient to suffer from low energy and high blood glucose. In type 1 diabetes which is also called juvenile diabetes the pancreas stops producing insulin altogether. Patients have to be treated with recombinant insulin before each meal to control high blood sugar levels. It is important to add medication, diet and exercise to control high blood sugar levels. Steady blood glucose levels within normal limits below 160mg/dl do not cause complications, suc h as diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy (Al-Rubeaan, et al., 2014), cardiovascular disease and foot problems. Apart from lifestyle changes, such as, regular exercise, diet control, weight loss, regular eye examination can help in the detection of diabetic retinopathy in the early stages for prevention of diabetic retinopathy. Screening for the detection of diabetic retinopathy involves a dilated fundus examination ,by a trained ophthalmologist. It is a safe and non-invasive procedure (Khandekar, 2012). The examination is done via Ophthalmoscopes with a 20 diopter lens. Evaluation of the retinal status and the macula is carried out. Presence of disease at the initial stages can be treated and permanent damage to the patient's eye can be prevented. In some patients diabetic maculopathy may also be observed but it usually occurs in some of the patients who have diabetic retinopathy. Although methods for detection are there, one reason for late diagnosis of the problem among diabetes patients in Saudi Arabia is that they are mostly examined by primary healthcare physicians who do not have sufficient training in the examination of the eyes for detection of early signs of retinopathy. This delays diagnosis, the symptoms of visual impairment begin to show up, but little can be done to prevent blindness at a late stage (Rasheeda Adelb, 2017). Training of primary healthcare physicians in conducting timely eye examination is therefore recommended. What actually cause retinopathy? The walls of the capillaries that supply blood to the retina weaken due to persistently high blood sugar levels. When the vessels rupture, due to a loss of sealing, the person begins to lose vision. This occurs in two phases. The first phase is asymptomatic and is referred to as the non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy. With time the number of abnormal capillaries increases and this affects the oxygenation at the retina, causes disruption in vision and the disease begins to progress to the proliferative phase. The retina begins to allow proliferative of newer capillaries to compensate for the loss of the earlier capillaries. The new and fragile vessels are called neo-vessels. The amplification of the proliferative phase reaches the macula where it causes a condition called macular edema. This causes decreased visual acuity and the vision becomes affected causing visual impairment (Aao.org, n.d.). Monitoring and Evaluation Monitoring and evaluation of retinopathy among patients will be done at several levels. Each screening centre will be a centre for monitoring patients and screening them for possible retinopathy. The weaknesses and strengths of each centre shall be monitored. Data from different screening centres will be compared to understand the benefits of the interventions. Centres with weaknesses will be made to function at par with those centres that perform well. Steroids And Athletes What kind of role model is Mark McGwire? Many people are familiar with his seventy homeruns in one season, but do they know that he has been using androstenedione, a type of steroid that boosts testosterone levels? While it is perfectly legal in the United States and in the major leagues, it sends the wrong health message to athletes of every age. If young adults take androstenedione, or any other steroid, they may regret it for the rest of their lives. Artificially high levels of testosterone have been shown to permanently damage the heart, trigger liver failure, and stunt a teenager's growth (Gorman 21-22). All are too great of a price for any sport. What it all comes down to is that we need to educate both ourselves and all intercollegiate athletes about the risks involved with steroid use. Anabolic-androgenic steroids are chemical derivatives of the male sex hormones. Anabolic refers to the constructive or building-up process of the body's metabolism. Androgen refers to male-life or masculinizing characteristics. There are also two other types of steroids: estrogenic or corticosteroids. Estrogenic steroids produce female or feminizing characteristics, and corticosteroids originate in the cortex of the adrenal glands and have a shrinking effect. The latter is used to treat tissue stress, reduce inflammation, and to ease pain (Ringhofer 174). Users take steroids in cycles lasting six to twelve weeks or more. Stacking, or the use of more than one type of steroid, helps to maximize strength gains, minimize side effects, and avoid detection. To build size, strength, and speed, athletes often use 10 to 100 times the medical dosage (Yesalis xxv). Anabolic-androgens can be taken either by mouth, by injection, or, more recently, by skin creams or patches (Cowart 25). The two main reasons that athletes use steroids are to improve athletic performance and to improve their appearance. In 1985, Anderson and McKeag did the first study of college athletes correlated with steroid use. They interviewed 2039 male and female athletes and discovered much new information. Nine percent of football players used anabolic-androgen steroids. Other male sports included track and field (4%), baseball (4%), tennis (4%), and basketball (3%). The only women's sport associated with steroid use was swimming, in which 1% were users. Five percent of Division I athletes were users in 1985, as well as 4% of D-II and 2% of D-III athletes. The same study was repeated in 1991, in which 2282 athletes were questioned. Overall, steroid use slightly increased, especially since three women's sports became associated with steroid use. Swimming remained at 1%, but one percent of basketball players and track and field athletes also admitted to using the drugs. For men's sports, the figures are the following: football (10%), track and field (4%), baseball (2%), basketball (2%), and tennis (2%). Five percent of both Division I and II athletes admitted to using steroids, as well as 4% of D-III athletes (Yesalis 60). Since then, steroid use has decreased in Division I sports, but increased among females. Steroid use by adolescent girls in the US is low but significant (Cowart 61). The use of anabolic-androgenic steroids can lead to some cosmetic side effects. First, they have an effect of body hair. Body hair patterns are steroid hormone dependent. Normal anabolic-androgenic steroid use can lead to an increase in facial hair growth and a gradual recession of the hairline. Balding is accelerated with long-term administration to normal individuals with the balding gene. Androgens increase sebaceous gland size and secretion rates, which can result in acne. Relatively weak androgens can increase sebum production and skin lipid cholesterol content also. Lipid cholesterol content appears at peak levels in the sebum excretion after three or four weeks of androgen administration (Yesalis 115-116). Gynecomastia, the development of abnormal breast tissue in males, "occurs in men when estrogen levels increase or androgen levels decrease relative to the amount of estrogen present" (Yesalis 116). Many other side effects occur that are not visible. Increase in appetite, energy, or aggressiveness, and a more rapid recovery from strenuous workouts may be some of the first to appear. Anabolic-androgenic steroids can affect the liver and cardiovascular and reproductive systems. Liver function can be damaged, resulting in jaundice, blood-filled cysts, and benign and malignant tumors. An increase in blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure can lead to early development of heart disease, which can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Don Quixote and Chivalric Ideals Free Online Research Papers During the era of Miguel de Cervantes, the ideals of chivalry and knighthood were the prominent themes in literature. Romantic tales of valiant knights and love captured the imaginations of medieval readers, and this influence proved still to be strong during the Renaissance. In the fifteenth century, these medieval values clashed with the new emphasis on reason. The influence of both sets of values can be seen in the Miguel de Cervantess novel, Don Quixote. In this work, Cervantes illustrates the idealistic character of Don Quixote, who is possesed by chivalric ideas of heroism and valor. Don Quixote sets out to reform the world along with his sensible companion Sancho Panca. After an ill-starred career as a knight-errant, Don Quixote renounces his ideals and is restored to excessive sensibility. At the same time, Sancho Panca champions the very ideas that Don Quixote comes to reject. Through his use of names and through the naive ideals of Don Quixote and his subsequent exchange of beliefs with Sancho Panca, Cervantes reveals the need for a proper balance between the extremes of idealism and rationalism. The subject of names is a prevalent one in Cervantess work. Cervantes begins the work with the peculiar declaration, In a certain village in La Mancha, the name of which I do not choose to remember, Don Quixote makes his residence. The anonymity of the village parallels Cervantess ambiguity when discussing Don Quixotes real name. He explains that he is said to have gone by the name of Quijada, or Quesada, although it is most likely that he was called Quijada. Cervantess deliberate manner of forgetting and his vagueness in relating Don Quixotes real name contrasts sharply with Don Quixotes own naming of things. In taking on his new role as knight-errant, he assumes the name Don Quixote de la Mancha, which, according to him reveals his lineage and honors his fortunate country.† In fact, Quixote signifies the armor that a knight wears to protect his thigh. In choosing this inglorious name, the title character shows his distorted sense of what is admirable. Don Quixote also selects the satisfactory name, Rosinante, for his horse, connoting a hack or nag. Furthermore, when he selects a healthy, buxom, country wench to fall in love with, he gives her the name Dulcinea del Toboso, which he regards as romantic, musical, and expressive, like the names he had chosen for himself and his horse. With such bizarre names that do not suit their subjects, Don Quixotes skewed perspective on life is shown. While Cervantes goes to one extreme and decides to forget the name of a town, Don Quixote intentionally picks out ridiculous names for himself, his horse, and his lady. With the absurdity of these extremes, Cervantes asserts the necessity of finding the middle ground. With the name of Quixote, the title character is presented as a comical, ludicrous figure. Cervantes refers to him often as the poor gentleman who has lost his senses and who has the brain of a madman. During his time as a knight-errant, Don Quixote travels far and wide seeking adventures and righting wrongs. In his mission to save the world, Don Quixote is inspired by the books he read of knights, chivalry, and honor. Everything he does is modeled on these romantic stories, into which Don Quixote immerses himself completely. He explains to Sancho Panca that knights-errant are not permitted to complain of any wound they receive. But he permits his squire to complain, as he had not read anything to the contrary in his books of knight-errantry. Another instance of Don Quixotes reliance on the model of his books occurs when stays awake thinking of his Lady Dulcinea because he read about those knights-errant who passed many sleepless nights in woods and deserts remembering their ladies. Thus, Don Quixote shapes his whole life around the fictional accounts of imaginary figures and looses control of his own life. During his adventurous journey, his â€Å"squire,† Sancho Panca, accompanies this would-be knight. This devoted servant is much more temporal than his master, and Sancho revels in such pleasures as plentiful food and a luxurious slumber. Sancho Panca shows his practicality when he warns Don Quixote of the foolishness of some of his missions. When Don Quixote plans to attack the perceived giants in fierce and unequal combat, Sancho implores him to see correctly that the giants are merely windmills. In addition to bestowing rational advice on his master, Sancho puts his trust in God, saying at various points, Gods will be done, and Lord have mercy upon us. While Don Quixote puts his faith in his tales of chivalry, Sancho relies on God for mercy and guidance, and with his rational behavior represents a great contrast to the senselessness of his master. The traits of master and servant are reversed, however, when Don Quixote is defeated in battle and returns home to renounce all his previously held beliefs. Suffering a severe sickness, Don Quixote is eventually restored to consciousness, and he at once declares that God is merciful and that he is now cleared of those dark shadows of ignorance that clouded his understanding from incessant reading of those detestable books of chivalry. This startling reversal in thought causes his friends to think that his sudden and easy transition from madness to sanity is a certain signal of his approaching death. Cervantes thus equates sanity with death: at a time when most people begin to lose their minds, Don Quixote is at his most rational. Another drastic transformation occurs in Sancho Panca. Upon seeing his master renounce his beliefs, Sancho entreats him to once again espouse chivalric ideals. Sancho encourages him to Get up and go walking in the fields with the hope that behind some bush t hey may find Lady Dulcinea. It is now Sancho who defends the absurd ideas that once deluded Don Quixote. It is unusually easy for both characters to exchange beliefs. Cervantes is therefore expressing the impossibility of remaining faithful to extreme beliefs such as those Don Quixote and Sancho Panca hold at different points in their lives. The logical conclusion, thus, is to find a middle road to which one can hold firm. The balance between idealism and reality is often difficult to find. The struggle to reach a middle ground is illustrated in Miguel de Cervantess novel, Don Quixote. Through the characters of Don Quixote and Sancho Panca, Cervantes illustrates the challenges individuals face to balance their lives with a mix of idealistic and rational thought. Cervantes establishes this struggle through the issue of names. In Cervantess forgetting the name of the village and in Don Quixotes deliberately giving absurd names to things, the folly of adopting extreme notions is shown. Cervantes follows with examples of excessive idealism and rationalism. In connecting sanity with death, Cervantes seems to dismiss rational thought as pointless. But his portrayal of Don Quixotes foolishness in his knightly adventures also illustrates a kind of futility. And in the two characters reversals at the end, Cervantes reveals that it is worthless to only adopt a single way of thinking. The two ends of idealism and pragmatism, however, must both exist in a persons life. If not for Sanchos rationalism, Don Quixotes journey would have been quite difficult. Likewise, without Don Quixotes fantasies, Sanchos life would have lacked entertainment. Such a story as Don Quixotes would not exist if not for the imagination; at the same time, it would be ridiculous to accept this story as truth and not consider it from a realistic point of view. Through this charming, yet sobering, tale, Cervantes illustrates that a proper balance between idealism and practicality must be achieved, and that without both principles, life is fruitless. How to Understand Mandarin Chinese Tones While residents across China use the same written character system, the way the words are pronounced differs from region to region. Standard Chinese is Mandarin  or Putonghua, and it consists of five pronunciation tones.  As a student of the Chinese language, the hardest part to differentiate is first, second, and fifth tones.   In 1958, the Chinese government rolled out its Romanized version of Mandarin. Prior to that, there were several different methods to sound out Chinese characters using English letters. Over the years, pinyin has become the standard around the world for those wishing to learn to properly pronounce Mandarin Chinese. This is how Peking became Beijing (which a more accurate pronunciation) in pinyin. Using characters, people simply know that that character is pronounced with a certain tone. In Romanized pinyin, many words suddenly had the same spelling, and it became necessary to designate tones within the word to differentiate them. Tones are of vital importance in Chinese. Depending on the choice of tone, you could be calling for your mother (maÌ„) or your horse (mă). Heres a brief introduction on the five vowel tones in the Mandarin language using the many words that are spelled ma. First Tone: ˉ This tone is designated by a straight line over the vowel (maÌ„) and is pronounced flat and high like the ma in Obama. Second Tone:  ´ This tones symbol is an upward slant from right to left over the vowel (maÃŒ ) and begins in the mid-tone, then rises to a high tone, as if asking a question. Third Tone: ˇ This tone has a V-shape over the vowel (mă) and starts low then goes even lower before it rises to a high tone. This is also known as falling-rising tone. Its as if your voice is tracing a check mark, starting at the middle, then lower then high. Fourth Tone: This tone is represented by a downward slant from right to left over the vowel (maÌ€) and begins in a high tone but falls sharply with a strong guttural tone at the end like you are mad. Fifth Tone: †§ This tone is also known as the neutral tone. Has no symbol over the vowel (ma) or is sometimes preceded with a dot (†§ma) and is pronounced flatly without any intonation. Sometimes its just slightly softer than first tone. There is another tone as well, used only for certain words and is designated by an umlaut or  ¨ or two dots over the vowel (lü). The standard way of explaining how to pronounce this is to purse your lips and say ee then end in an oo sound. Its one of the hardest Chinese tones to master so it may help to find a Chinese-speaking friend and ask them to pronounce the word for green, and listen closely!

Th is gathered evidence about the efficacy and safety of using Ofirmev (the only available US FDA approved Intravenous Acetaminophen in the market), how it benefits patients, and actually improved the quality of pain management. There were evidences based on actual clinical trials with patients that proved the efficacy and safety of Intravenous Paracetamol to neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and even the elderly with age 65 years old and above, for mild, moderate, and severe cases of pain, especially postoperative pain. Introduction Focus is given to the extent of actual benefits observed in many clinical trials, limitations, and clarifications pertaining to the use of I.V. Paracetamol use for postoperative pain management. As a background, over a year after the introduction of the US FDA approved injectable pain reliever under the brand name Ofirmev, doctors have pursued further clinical trials in Europe and the USA covering thousands of patients. One of the reference s of this paper took the effort to search for registered clinical trials in order to learn more about efficacy, safety, proportion of patients who responded favourably or not, to mostly postoperative cases. It would be interesting to know under what conditions I.V. Acetaminophen should be administered to patients. What procedures were followed? Why? The US FDA (2012a) announced that the limitation per dosage of acetaminophen should be 325 mg. while the total maximum dosage per day must not exceed 4 grams. For infants, the recommended dose of the US FDA for acetaminophen in vial is only 50 mL per child weighing less than 33 kg. (US FDA 2012b, p.12) There were cases of acetaminophen over dosages in infants and adults in the past. For adults, from 1998 to 2003, a total of 131 people experienced â€Å"acute liver failure in the United States† due to acetaminophen overdose (US FDA 2012a). Nonetheless, the medical practice has changed from using mostly opioids like morphine and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to the preferred use of Intravenous Acetaminophen in combination with less opioids only when needed, for reasons that will be disclosed in this paper. Ballroom dancing versus everyday conflict :: essays research papers

Good Morning/Afternoon Mr. Strathdee and fellow English scholars, today we take a journey into the world of ballroom dancing. Ballroom dancing, although not a dance of individualism, it also rebels against the label of conformity often thrown at it. Our task was to compare the documentary ‘Absolutely Ballroom’, and the movie ‘Strictly Ballroom’. To properly undertake our task we were compelled to lose ourselves in the plots, music and techniques used in both films. Both show us the highs and lows of songs, elaborate dance routines, lavish costumes, and outlandish characters. We watch as the plot weaves between drama and romance, while demanding the audience understand the importance of freedom and defying all bonds to achieve your dreams and ultimately victory in the face of all that opposes you. The plot of â€Å"Absolutely Ballroom† is admittedly a little boring; however it has some relevant points that we find ourselves being able to relate to within the documentary, holding our attention throughout the half an hour it ran for. â€Å"Absolutely Ballroom† was based in the town of Ystrad fawr, population 10 000, where ballroom dancing is lame and disco is the in thing. Within this quaint little town there is thirty-two female ballroom dancers; none with a male partner. A group of eight courageous young teens set out to find eight male partners. They succeed. The question is which ones would stay? Be who you are; not who someonelse tries to make you. This is the theme of â€Å"Strictly Ballroom†. It’s a story of two young people, Scott and Fran, and their fight to be individuals and free to do and be who they feel they truly are. They forsake tradition and family to dance their own steps together at the Pan-Pacific Grand Pix. In the documentary ‘Absolutely Ballroom’, many techniques are used to entice the audience to continue to watch their presentation of reality television. The first aspect is the songs they use. To be truly effective, as this documentary was, the songs must fit perfectly so that the audience subconsciously is listening, but consciously is observing the images on screen and don’t missing out on any important information which may detract from the story – line. A documentary technique obviously favored in this production was real life action footage, or unobtrusive camera. In all the interviews staged, you don’t see the camera or hear the questions being asked. A lot of the footage filmed is of the dancers’ feet, floor shots and aerial shots.

To what extent did Lenin establish Communism in Russia from 1920-1924? From an early age, Lenin opposed the Romanov autocratic regime, even more so following the execution of his brother for the assassination of Tsar Alexander III. Lenin was an avid follower of the writings of Karl Marx and believed communism was the way forward. He believed that everything should be owned by the government and then distributed evenly amongst the people. During the February 1917 revolution in Russia, Lenin was in exile. He knew his right-hand man Trotsky would tell him when the time was right to come back to Russia.The end of the February Revolution led to the end of the Romanov dynasty and to the Provisional Government under Lvov and Kerensky. It also meant the return of Lenin. By October 1917, he felt the time was right for a Bolshevik revolution. It was relatively bloodless and Lenin assumed the responsibility of governing Russia. Between 1920 and 1924, Lenin and the Bolsheviks attempted to shape the destiny of Russia and establish communism. He said, ‘’History will never forgive us if we do not assume power now’’.Having taking over Russia, Lenin now had the challenge of holding on to power. The first thing he did was put a decree on land. This meant that peasants were allowed take over private land. Therefore, landlords weren’t very happy about this. He also abolished the Assembly. Lenin believed in a one party dictatorship and this step was necessary for it to happen. It was at this time that the Bolsheviks became known as Communists. In an attempt to make all people equal, everyone was to be addressed at ‘’Comrade’’. Lenin’s next step now was to make peace.The slogan of the Communists was ‘’Peace, bread, land’’. From fighting in World War I, Russia was on the verge of bankruptcy. Lenin knew something had to be done. The Russians were losing battle after battle and the country co uldn’t take any more of it. Also, the army was in disarray. Soldiers were losing heart and most of them were killed. Lenin realised this had to be stopped. He was pragmatic and knew the country couldn’t take it much longer. Therefore, Lenin signed a peace agreement with Germany. This was known as the Brest-Litovsk Treaty or The Shameful Treaty.Although it obtained peace in Russia, it involved in the country losing a quarter of its land and population, eighty per cent of its coal mines and thirty three per cent of it farming land and manufacturing industry. Lenin insisted the survival of the communist regime depended on it! Lenin however was faced with opposition, collectively known as the ‘’Whites’’. These included a disarray of groups such as social revolutionaries, supporters of the Provisional Government, landlords, tsarist supporters and many more. This gave rise to a civil war in Russia. The war was the ‘’Reds’â€℠¢ vs. he ‘’Whites’’. The Reds had many more advantages than the Whites. The Red Army were under Trotsky, a very skilled military tactician. The Reds were being attacked from every direction by the Whites with the help of the Allied Powers. However, the Reds greatest threat was Pilsudski and his Polish army. This was the only battle were Lenin had peace negotiations and were he lost some of Russian territory. As time passed, Allied support lessened. This was a big disadvantage for the Whites. The Reds had another advantage over the Whites, they were more united.The Whites had many different groups who wanted and fought for different things so it didn’t work in their favour. One further advantage for the Reds was that they were located in central Russia, which was capable of being defended. This ended in victory for the Reds. During the civil war, Lenin took control of economic and political problems. He followed a policy of War Communism. This policy saw Lenin ensure that all industry and agriculture within the Communist –controlled territory was geared solely towards the war effort.All of the surplus crops that were grown by the farmers were requisitioned by the government and distributed between the workers and soldiers. Food detachments were sent to the countryside to get the food. This was very unpopular with the farmers. They began to cut back in grain production so eventually, Russia experienced a famine. An estimation of between five and seven million people died due to hunger. The Red Terror was set up by the Cheka. The Cheka were a secret police force set up to arrest and execute people who they believed opposed Lenin and the Communists.Any opposition to Lenin was dealt with legalised acts of brutality. It was a systematic terror designed to ensure the continuation of Communist rule. The Kronstadt Rising gave the Cheka a great opportunity to put down the revolt. The naval soldiers that were involved were brutall y treated and were easily defeated. Following the end of the Civil War, Lenin knew that change needed to be made. He ended War Communism and brought in the New Economic Policy. There was serious discontent which undermined support for Communism.The NEP ended the requisition of food from the peasants, peasants were now allowed to sell their surplus for profit and private enterprise was allowed in small factories. Although many of these terms were contrary to Communist beliefs, Lenin said that ‘’we must take a step backwards in order to go two steps forward at a later date’’. Although Lenin did not live to see the full effects of the New Economic Policy, he had a great effect on the Russians and established the first ever Communist state. Lenin took many steps in order for Russia to become a Communist state.

The Final Gift

The average person knows very little of death; it is a feared topic and not openly discussed. We misunderstand the process, do not know what to expect, and there is great mystery surrounding the end of life. The authors saw a much-needed chance to educate the public, to allow them to learn from death, even to appreciate it as a natural part life. The patient does not know what they are facing, and are burdened with extreme fear. Many have unresolved issues in their lives, and these can be the source of great agitation and even panic as they approach the end.The caregivers, oth family and the medical team, use medication to ease physical pain but this is often not enough to produce peace. The authors know from experience that helping the patient requires more then simple pain management. One must listen and interpret what is happening, to help alleviate any concerns the patient has. Callanan and Kelley share the wisdom and the â€Å"gifts† patients offer in death, by approachin g each situation with â€Å"open hearts†¦ and minds† and celebrating the patient's life. (callanan ; Kelley, 1992) The authors coin the phrase â€Å"Nearing Death Awareness† to summarize the dying process. Callanan ; Kelley, p. 1) The dying have an â€Å"awareness† of what is happening to them, and possibly even a glimpse into an afterlife. With some basic education, families are taught to care for loved ones, making them comfortable, which change to look for. The dying should be given the choice on how and where they will spend their final time. They most often choose the familiar setting of home, surrounded by loved ones. Hospice nurses and other medical professions are available on site, giving care and support not only to the patient, but also to the family. Death is portrayed in our modern society as dramatic and painful.Often family members become simple spectators, playing no role in providing comfort leaving everything to the medical staff. (Callana n ; Kelley, p. 38) Callanan and Kelley seek to make families and friends more involved in the dying process; providing care and comfort. They understand what their loved one is experiencing, learn from it, and help them pass with dignity and peace. The passing will often leave us with clues, some related to their lives, professions, hobbies; and these are ways of them telling loved ones that they are dying, an attempt to make final communications.It is important for the family to listen for such clues and interpret them, to communicate with their loved one and reassure them that they will be fine; the arrangements have been made. Visions of an afterlife and visitations by deceased loved ones are common with many patients before death. This seems to offer comfort to most who experience this, and they are often unable to describe in words they Joy and beauty that they witness. The authors recognize these as supernatural and spiritual events. They serve to ready the patient for the aft erlife, and Join loved ones who have passed n.The scientific community disputes such assertions; viewing such occurrences as simple functions of the brain as it is failing and dying. Such â€Å"visions† would then be common to patients, as a shared physiological process we all experience from dying and near death experiences. The authors do not attempt to explain or dispute the reality ot these supernatural events They snare what a loved one might experience as they near death to educate. The experiences they have witnessed and the Joy and comfort brought about in an extremely difficult time by these spiritual events.The patient and their family will go through five stages in dealing with impending death: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Denial is a result of shock; it keeps those involved from accepting the reality of the situation. (Callanan ; Kelley, p. 44) Denial should never be encouraged, as it can give false hope, and make the diagnosis even more difficult to accept. Anger can be the toughest to deal with, and can be driven by fear and resentment. Empathy and support should be offered as one works through the anger.Understanding and communication are important to try and overcome anger. Bargaining is best understood as an almost child-like behavior, â€Å"one more hug, one more story, one more drink of water (before bedtime)† (Callanan ; Kelley, p. 53) The dying try to postpone what is inevitable; and usually this bargaining is with a higher power, God. They make promises of change or good deeds while trying to â€Å"buy' more time or better health. Those around the patient may not be aware of the bargaining process, as the patient pleads with â€Å"god† in private.Depression stems from grief of losing relationships, health, future opportunities and experiences. (Callanan & Kelley, p. 4) The patient seeks to be understood and empathized with; attempts to dismiss or make light of the depression only worsen the situation. Acceptance finally comes as death approaches. Acceptance of death can be peaceful, yet painful for the family as they realize their loved one is ready to move on. (Callanan & Kelley, p. 55) Acceptance of death can be misinterpreted that one is giving up, does not care, or is detached from loved ones. The patient often knows they are dyi ng; their final mission is to make amends, find closure, and wrap up any â€Å"loose ends† in their life.It is important for the dying to know their family will be taken care of, that they accept their departure. I have yet to personally experience any near death experiences, and find myself somewhat skeptical about he role a higher power and afterlife. I do not dismiss or deny any such experiences.I am able to draw personal comfort knowing there appears to be a peace that comes with such events as ones nears death. These near death experiences play an important role in giving Joy and comfort to those passing from this life. I do not need a scientific or religious explanation of the source, and there are infinite theories on the subject. Simply kn owing that such events are a cause of peace for the dying is very comforting. The authors seek to change death from taboo and feared to a part of life more nderstood and accepted.It is portrayed badly in media, as a sad and painful event. They seek to change the stereotypes of death, to educate the reader, help them face their own death or that of a loved one. Hospice care looks to alleviate the physical pain of the terminally ill, however emotional distress should not be overlooked.
